3rd Overseas Technical Visit to Jiading District, Jinqiao, Shanghai, China on 12 & 13 July 2026

The Pavement Engineering Society (Singapore) had previously organized two overseas pre-conference technical visits. This year, the Society organized a post-conference technical visit in relation to the 15th Asia-Pacific Conference on Transportation & the Environment which was held in Jeju, South Korea on 8th to 10th July 2026.”
There were altogether 15 participants including 9 PES Council members with 6 PES members and corporate members from Singapore.
The delegates visited the following places:
Shanghai Chengjian Hichireki Special Asphalt Co., Ltd. A Sino-Japanese joint venture specializing in the research, production, and sale of advanced asphalt materials for roads and bridges.
Shanghai F1 Racetrack in the Jiading District of Shanghai.
Shanghai Yangsen Speciality Chemical Co., Ltd. A manufacturer specializing in industrial floor paints, synthetic resins, colour pavement and road marking materials.
Shanghai Jinqiao Autonomous Driving & Smart City Center.
Visit to Shanghai Chengjian Hichireki Special Asphalt Co., Ltd
On 12 July morning the delegates visited the Shanghai Chengjian Hichireki Special Asphalt Co., A joint venture between Japan's Nichireki co Ltd. and Shanghai Highway and Bridge (Group) Co., Ltd. The company undertook the Shanghai F1 Racetrack pavement project.
The visit started off with a technical discussion on the challenges of developing a pavement materials for the F1 racetrack. The host shared the initial difficulties they faced in sourcing for suitable materials, problems they encountered to produce a design mix and the measures they have taken to ensure the quality and performance of the pavement for the racetrack.
Dr Low, President of PES(S), in turn also shared the challenges and difficulties faced by Singapore contractors in the mix design and paving process. Unlike the Shanghai F1 racetrack which is solely dedicated for the F1 race and MotorGP, the Singapore F1 racetrack is over a normal city road circuit which doubled up as the F1 racetrack. Besides the 3 days for the F1 race, the Singapore’s F1 circuit is opened to normal traffic for commune all year round. This poses much challenges and difficulties to prepare the racetrack for the F1 race. On the whole the discussion session was very enlightening, informative and educational.

After the fruitful discussion, the delegates visited their research and materials testing laboratories which house many state-of-the-art equipment.

Visit to Shanghai Yangsen Speciality Chemical Co., Ltd
On 12 July afternoon, the delegates visited the Shanghai Yangsen Speciality Chemical Co., Ltd. A manufacturer specializing in industrial floor paints, synthetic resins, colour pavement and road marking paint. The delegates was briefed on the various industrial flooring resins, anti-abrasion and skid resistant seal, water-borne road marking and multi-pattern road marking machines. They also demonstrated the quick setting anti-skid seal, road marking and colour surface coating.

Visit to Shanghai F1 racetrack at in the Jiading District of Shanghai
On the 13 July morning, the delegates were brought to the Shanghai F1 Racetrack site and treated with a rare opportunity to tour the entire premises including the VIP gallery, the media production room, viewing the model of the F1 circuit with explanation highlighting the key features of the Shanghai F1 circuit. The delegates also had the chance to travel one round on the racetrack.

Visit to Shanghai Jinqiao Autonomous Driving & Smart City Center
After the Shanghai F1 Racetrack visit, the delegates proceeded to the Shanghai Jinqiao Autonomous Driving & Smart City Center at Pudong. The Center is the anchor of China's premier pilot zone for Level 4 autonomous driving and smart mobility. Located in Pudong New Area, it serves as the command, testing, and operational hub for large-scale driverless public road networks. It is a the first downtown megacity zone in China where fully driverless, fare-charging robotaxis operate. The public can hail driverless taxis via local apps (e.g., the Pony.ai or Jinjiang Smart Mobility mini-programs).
The delegates were briefed on its testing and live monitoring systems and some of its legislative considerations.
