About Us
Our Origins & Founding Vision
In 1992, a pioneering group of industry practitioners and academics came together with a shared mission: to bridge the gap between research and practice in pavement engineering. Their efforts culminated in the 1st Conference on Road & Airfield Pavement Technology for Southeast Asia 1993, a landmark event focused on advancing construction and maintenance technologies. The overwhelming success of this conference demonstrated the region’s need for a dedicated platform to foster collaboration and innovation.

Inspired by this momentum, the same group of professionals formally established the Pavement Engineering Society (Singapore) on 30 September 1994, with an inaugural Council of 15 members, led by Founding President Professor Fwa Tien Fang. Since then, PES(S) has grown into a cornerstone of the pavement engineering community, driven by its founding principles of knowledge exchange, technological advancement, and professional recognition.

Our Mission & Objectives
PES(S) objectives are:
-
Facilitating Collaboration: Serving as a dynamic forum for professionals, researchers, and policymakers to exchange of ideas, innovations, and best practices in pavement engineering.
-
Advancing Technology & Skills: Promoting cutting-edge research, training, and practical solutions to address the evolving challenges of pavement design, construction, and maintenance.
-
Elevating the Profession: Advocating for the expertise and recognition of pavement engineers and enhancing public awareness of their critical role in sustainable infrastructure development.
-
Professional Excellence: Serving an active role in supporting Singapore's infrastructure development by advising on national standard, bridging industry and government, developing local talent and supporting Smart Nation Goals in innovation in pavement materials, recycling technologies, and digital solutions (e.g., AI-based maintenance systems) to enhance the longevity and sustainability of Singapore’s road networks.

Our Legacy of Excellence
For over three decades, PES(S) has been at the forefront of shaping the pavement engineering landscape through flagship initiatives:
-
Singapore Symposium on Pavement Technology (SPT): Launched in 1995, this annual symposium showcases the latest research, case studies, and technological breakthroughs in pavement engineering.
-
International Conference on Road & Airfield Pavement Technology (ICPT): Launched in 1993, this conference is a premier biennial conference series hosted across East Asia, fostering global dialogue on pavement innovations.
-
Asia Pacific Symposium on Transportation and the Environment (APTE): Launched in 1998, this conference provides a platform to explore environmentally and socially sustainable solutions for transportation across the Asia-Pacific region.
-
Sustainable Airport Pavement Management (SAPM): Launched in 2024, this conference is a specialized conference series hosted in Singapore, addressing the unique challenges of airport pavement sustainability and resilience.

Through these initiatives, PES(S) aims to strengthen Singapore's reputation as a hub for pavement engineering expertise and build enduring partnerships with international organizations, governments, and academia.

Join Our Journey
PES(S) invites pavement professionals, researches, and industry stakeholders to join us in shaping the future of infrastructure. Together, we can drive innovation, share knowledge, and build resilient, sustainable pavements for generations to come.
