14th International Conference on Road and Airfield Pavement Technology (ICPT) 2025, 16 to 18 July 2025, Chiang Mai, Thailand

The 14th ICPT 2025 was held from 16 to 18 July 2025 in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The conference is a longstanding event that brings together road and airport pavement researchers, engineers, and governmental officials to promote pavement technological advancement worldwide. The event was organised by the Chiangmai University, International Committee of Pavement Technology and Pavement Engineering Society (Singapore). It was held at Chiang Mai Marriot Hotel.   

 

There were more than 210 participants from 26 different countries and regions including Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Brunei, China, France, Germany, Indonesia, India, Japan, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Morocco, Philippines, New Zealand, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Togo, United Kingdom and United States.  

 

On Day 1, the welcome addresses were delivered by Prof. Peerapong Jitsangiam (Chair of 14th ICPT and Deputy Director in Multidisciplinary Research Institute, Chiang Mai University), Assoc. Prof. Thongchai Fongsamootr (Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Chiang Mai University) and Prof. Fwa Tien Fang (Chair of the International Committee of Pavement Technology and Dean of School of Future Transportation, Chang’an University, China).

There were five keynote lectures presented on the first day of the conference, namely,

 

1.     “Sustainable Intelligent Transportation Infrastructure and System (ITIS) for Eternal Peace and Prosperity” by Prof. Prof. Kang-Won Lee, University of Rhode Island, USA.

2.     “Pavement Stabilisation of Recycled Wastes Utilising Alternative Low-carbon Binders” by Prof. Prof. Arul Arulrajah, Swinburne University of Technology, Australia.    

3.     “Sustainable Performance Improvement Techniques for Road Pavements” by Prof. Prof. Suksun Horpibulsuk, Suranaree University of Technology (SUT), Thailand.

4.     “Enhance Pavement Resilience to Flooding: Impact Assessment and Mitigation Strategies” by Prof. Prof. Hao Wang, Rutgers University, USA.

5.     “Deflection-based Evaluation and Performance of Asphalt Pavements in Thailand” by Dr. Auckpath Sawangsuriya, Department of Highways, Thailand.  


Over 130 papers were presented at the 3-day conference. There were 13 topics which include:

4.     Advance Studies in Pavement Engineering

5.     Applications of Intelligent Technologies in Pavement Engineering

9.     Recycling Pavement Materials

10.  Sustainable Asphalt

11.  Smart Pavement Monitoring

12.  Technology in Airport pavement

13.  Transportation Geotechnics


The PES has participated in the event with a contingent of 12 council members, namely,

There were also other Singapore delegates from private companies and government agencies including Changi Airport Group, Defence Science and Technology Agency, Land Transport Authority. The PES and Singapore delegates actively participated in the conference through paper presentations.

On the last day and closing ceremony of the conference, the announcement of the next 15th ICPT 2027 was presented by Prof. Ma Feng from Chang’an University, China.

Apart from the technical sessions, the PES delegates also attended a technical tour on 18 July 2025. They visited the Advanced Pavement & Railway Labs in Chiang Mai University and the Waste Management Center (Energy Research and Development Institute-Nakornping, Chiang Mai University). During the visit to Advanced Pavement & Railway Labs, participants learnt on performance evaluation of construction materials including recycled waste through various laboratory testing.

In Waste Management Center, Chiang Mai University shared their sustainable waste strategies and how they recycling the plastic waste for asphalt pavement. PES delegates also visited the biomass plant which able to process organic waste through dry anaerobic method and produce electricity for use in the university and to generate biomethane gas for refuelling university mass transit vehicles.

The 14th ICPT 2025 was successfully organized and we hope to meet again in 15th ICPT 2027 at Xi’an, China.
