  7th International Conference on Road and Airfield Pavement Technology (ICPT)

The 7th ICPT was held in Bangkok, Thailand from 3 to 5 August 2011 at Queen's Sirikit National Convention Center. The host organizers for the event are Ministry of Transport of Thailand, Roads Association of Thailand and Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkron University.

There are over 400 participants which include 123 overseas delegates from 22 foreign countries such as Australia, China, Egypt, France, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Netherlands, Singapore and USA.

The opening address was delivered by Prof. Direk Lavansiri, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, followed by Prof. Fwa Tien Fang, Chairman of the International Executive Committee of ICPT and Mr. Suphoth Sublom, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport of Thailand.

There are four keynote lectures presented at the conference, namely,
1) "Theoretical and Actual Trends of the Pavement Remaining Service Life and Their Impacts on the Cost-Effectiveness of the Pavement Management Decisions" by Prof. Gilbert Baladi, Michigan State University.
2) "Using Road User-Oriented Approach in Pavement Evaluation: Critical Data and Potential Tools" by Prof. Akira Kawamura, Kitami Institute of Technology
3) "Challenges and Opportunities in Developing Sustainable Asphalt Pavement" by Youngsoo Richard Kim, North Carolina State University
4) "Decision Making in an Asset Management Environment: Data and Tools" by Dr Omar Smadi, Iowa State University.

A total of 112 papers were presented at the conference. The topics include materials, testing and evaluation, maintenance and rehabilitation, management system, operational characteristics and performance, construction, economic and environmental issues as well as design and analysis

Pavement Engineering Society, Singapore (PES) has supported the event by organizing a contingent of delegation with 7 society members, namely,

The delegation actively participated in the conference through paper presentation and chairing some of the sessions.

The conference also included a technical tour to Kanchanaburi. The delegates visited the famous Bridge on the River Kwai which is widely known as the "Death Railway". It links Thailand and Myanmar and was constructed by the Allied prisoners of war (POW) during World War II. They also visited the JEATH War Museum which is an open air museum constructed in bamboo to duplicate a POW camp and showcases a wide collection of photographs, weapons, utensils and many other materials from the war. The delegates also had a memorable train ride along the Death Railway which marks the end of the tour.

The 7th ICPT conference was successfully organized. The next ICPT conference shall be held in Taiwan in 2013 and we hope to meet again in two years time.
